At Council’s meeting held on 17 September 2024, it was decided to correct a long-standing error by changing the spelling of Cheeseman Road, Normanville to Cheesman Road in line with the wishes of the Cheesman family and the support of the Yankalilla Historical Society.

The error originated from incorrect Lands Titles Office records. The misspelling affects all State Government data, satellite maps, and street signs.

In accordance with Council’s Road Naming Policy, it is commencing the road naming process and inviting community feedback on the proposed road name change.

All submissions will be considered at a future Council meeting where they may also make a determination on the proposed road name change. At this meeting Council will also declare the date the change is to take effect if the road name is changed.

Submissions close Wednesday 25 June 2025.

What's next?

Should the road name be changed, the following will happen::

· public notices will be placed in the Government Gazette and the Fleurieu Sun newspaper;

· any party who has made a written submission will be notified of the outcome; and

· relevant parties including the owners of abutting properties, the Registrar-General, Surveyor-General and Valuer-General will be provided with written notice of the name change.


Our legislative obligations

Under section 219 of the Local Government Act 1999, Council has the power to assign a name to a public road. In accordance with its Road Naming Policy, Council must provide notice to the community that it will be assigning an updated name to the currently misspelt road and the community are provided the opportunity to comment. Following community participation in the process Council will consider the feedback and formally adopt a revision.
