Consultation on the lifting of the Genetically Modified crops moratorium
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LinkedinEmail this link
**This consultation has now closed**
The State Government's recent amendments to the Genetically Modified (GM) Crops Management Act 2004 has effectively lifted the ban on growing GM crops in South Australia (excluding Kangaroo Island).
Local Government has been given a ‘once off’ opportunity to make a request to the Minister for the GM free crop status to be reinstated.
‘Have Your Say’
We are seeking feedback from our community, particularly those engaged in primary production activities or food processing/manufacturing activities in the District Council of Yankalilla area, about the impact (if any) of genetically modified (GM) crops.
We encourage you to read our FAQs to understand what Council’s role is, and why our engagement is seeking only to understand the potential economic impacts (good, bad or nuanced) – rather than health or environmental issues.
Please direct submissions to Council’s Your Say Yankalilla website.. Please note that any submissions received in time will be considered at a public meeting of Council and may be forwarded to the Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development for their consideration.
“Your Feedback” will help Council decide whether to apply to the Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development for the District Council of Yankalilla to be designated as a ‘Non-GM crop area’.
The Minister will ONLY consider how GM crops could impact trade and marketing potential when deciding whether or not our region should be GM crop free. Because of this, our survey is focused on these issues in particular.
